First: Have you Called the Client?

You only get one chance to make a first impression. Please be prepared for your initial call to the client. Here are some tips.

ONCE FIRST LESSON IS SET, 3 EASY FORMS TO MAKE IT OFFICIAL

1. Contractor Agreement You’ll be tempted to skim this document, but please be sure to note the following:

  • We do not withhold taxes. If you earn more than $600 in any year, we will send you a 1099 tax form, and you’ll be responsible for paying your own taxes. (Turbotax or similar tax software handles this very easily.) (1st clause)
  • Our cancellation policy protects you in the event of no-shows and usually for late cancellations. Learn more about our cancellation policy on our blog. You must report these to our office immediately. (2nd clause, part d)
  • Our non-compete clause is common sense, and we do not prohibit you from working for other tutoring companies and tutoring your own students. We simply require you to refrain from privately tutoring any of our clients for a period of two years after your last session with them on our behalf. Similarly, referrals that come from your work for us should also stay with us. Sometime a parent will pass your number directly to a friend. In such cases, please send the friend to us. You will of course get first refusal in taking the new client. (3rd clause)
  • You are contractually bound to get the client to sign a lesson sheet. So often tutors fail to do this, and it gets so messy when the parent questions an hour on their invoice and you have to go back through texts to try to prove you were there. (6th clause, part a)
  • Please give us two weeks’ notice if you need to quit. This is professional behavior and also psychologically important to many children to be able to say goodbye to their coach. We pretty much never refuse to pay a coach who quits without notice, but per the contract we could. (7th clause, part d)

2. Criminal Disclosure Form is short and straightforward. We’ll also usually initiate a background check at our expense. Watch for an email from CastleBranch!

 3. The last form is a combined Direct Deposit Authorization and W-9 form for you to input your banking information and your social security number. You should report your hours weekly and consider the cut-off for pay dates. Click here to learn about our payment procedures.
